Installation & Care

Can You Use Zellige Tile in a Shower or Bathroom?

Quick answer: A zellige-inspired shower can look beautiful, but a wet-area installation is a technical assembly, not merely a pretty tile surface. Some specific handmade ceramic tiles may be acceptable on shower walls when the manufacturer confirms suitability. Shower floors, submerged areas and high-traffic commercial wet zones require more specialized checks. This guide separates design inspiration from waterproofing and performance decisions.

Can handmade zellige go on shower walls?

Some tile products can be used on shower walls, but only when the actual tile and glaze are approved for the exposure. Ask the supplier about water absorption, glaze compatibility, chemical resistance and maintenance. A genuine handmade appearance is not a substitute for installation documentation. The installer should follow a design appropriate to the substrate and local building code.

Is grout enough to make a zellige shower waterproof?

No. According to the Tile Council of North America, grout joints are not waterproof; the wet-area system, substrate and membrane details must manage water. A beautiful narrow joint does not replace a waterproof assembly. Where the tile and substrate move differently, the designer must also address movement joints and compatible sealants. Use a qualified installer familiar with the applicable TCNA methods.

Can zellige be used on the shower floor?

Do not assume a glazed decorative wall tile works underfoot. The shower floor needs appropriate slip resistance, drainage, slope, size format and wet-area performance. Small shapes may provide more joints but that does not automatically make them compliant. Specify a particular verified tile, evaluate the intended barefoot and wet conditions, and have the designer and installer approve the complete assembly.

Should zellige shower tiles be sealed?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some glazed surfaces are less absorbent than their exposed clay edges or backs; an unglazed or porous tile may call for an appropriate sealer if the manufacturer recommends it. Grout chemistry and local water hardness also influence care. Test any treatment on the actual samples, and avoid sealing as a substitute for proper waterproofing.

What grout color works in a zellige bathroom?

A tone close to the tile can emphasize an organic field, while contrasting grout highlights each irregular edge. Neither is universally correct. Ask the designer to review a mock-up under both daylight and artificial light. Extremely narrow joints can create problems if the actual tile dimensions vary; let the installer propose a compatible, feasible joint rather than enforcing a decorative ideal from a photograph.

Why do zellige surfaces look different after they get wet?

Water, steam and lighting can temporarily change how you perceive gloss and shadows; porous edges and grout may appear darker when wet. Persistent discoloration can also signal moisture or product issues. Do not diagnose the assembly from appearance alone. Verify product suitability and waterproofing before installation and follow the specific manufacturer’s cleaning and drying guidance.

What should architects request for a shower project?

Request a sample board, actual tile specifications, documented wet-area suitability, glaze finish, dimensional range, approved adhesive and grout recommendations, and a clear waterproofing system detail. Include the design professional’s project code requirements. Zellige Atelier can help source potential samples, but we cannot certify a bathroom assembly without a named manufacturer and project information.
