What Sizes Do Moroccan Zellige Tiles Come In? Dimensions Explained

Quick answer: There is no single mandatory size for every Moroccan zellige workshop. Buyers often ask for 2×2 or 4×4 inch square tiles, long rectangles, bejmat and geometric pieces, but actual dimensions and thickness must come from the selected supplier’s samples and written specification. Treat an online size label as a design direction until measured.

Questions answered in this guide

Are 4×4 inch zellige tiles exactly four inches wide?

Not necessarily. A nominal 4 × 4 in listing may refer to approximately 10 × 10 cm, which is about 3.94 × 3.94 in. Handmade edges can add dimensional variation; a 100 mm metric tile and a guaranteed 4.000-inch rectified tile are not the same specification. When comparing quotes, ask for the nominal size, observed sample range and whether the figure covers the tile body or installed module, including joints.

Are 2×2 inch zellige tiles appropriate for mosaics?

Small square field tiles can support compact patterns, while traditional hand-cut zellij also uses many non-square mosaic pieces. A nominal 2-inch request may correspond to a metric format close to 5 cm; never assume a stocked size. For detailed curves, corners or intricate motifs, ask the workshop whether the shapes are hand-cut, preassembled or supplied loose, and request a representative pattern panel.

What shapes are available besides the classic square?

Designers commonly investigate rectangular bejmat, diamonds, hexagons, triangles, stars, crosses and custom borders. However, a form appearing in a concept catalogue does not prove that a given artisan can make it at the desired size, glaze and quantity. The shape, edge profile and production method need workshop validation. Start with our Tile Finder to explore shapes as design enquiries rather than inventory.

Why do zellige dimensions vary between pieces?

Traditional ceramic work can vary during shaping, drying, firing, cutting and glazing. Small edge and face variations are part of the visual character, but not every tolerance is acceptable in a particular architectural detail. The actual allowable range should be written into the approved sample standard. For a neat edge or precisely aligned opening, specify the condition that needs control instead of assuming factory-style rectification.

How thick is a handmade zellige tile?

Thickness depends on the specific ceramic body, format, workshop and finishing process. Do not use a generic number from another retailer as the thickness of an unverified Zellige Atelier concept. Ask the supplier for measured thickness range, backing condition, weight and compatibility with the chosen setting system. Related reading: thickness and tolerances.

Should an architect specify inches or millimeters?

For U.S. projects, show both. Inches help the local construction team; millimeters give an unambiguous metric target to a Moroccan workshop. A drawing might say ‘nominal 100 × 100 mm (approximately 3.94 × 3.94 in), verify actual sample dimensions’. Always distinguish dimensions of one tile from the tile-plus-joint module and from the full packed unit.

How should size be recorded in the final quote?

Include the product concept reference, requested shape, nominal dimensions in millimeters, thickness and its range, joint intent, finish, application, project quantity, approved sample number and tolerance acceptance. The final supplier’s reference should appear separately from Zellige Atelier’s internal color number. Approval must happen before an order or installation method is treated as final.

Which square size should I choose for my kitchen backsplash?

Small squares produce a more rhythmic surface with more joints, while larger squares allow the glaze variation of each tile to dominate. Neither option is automatically better. Mock up the actual wall width, corners and cabinet edges; then obtain two sample sizes and assess under the kitchen’s lighting. See our white backsplash guide and application guide.
