Zellige vs Subway Tile: Which Looks Better and Costs More?

Quick answer: Zellige refers to Moroccan ceramic craft and its broader family of hand-finished tile, whereas subway tile usually describes a rectangular layout format, not a material origin. A tile can be both handmade and rectangular. The meaningful choice is between a verified ceramic product’s finish, dimensional consistency, technical rating, installed cost and aesthetic character.

Questions answered in this guide

Decision factor Handmade zellige concept Typical manufactured subway tile
Appearance Possible tile-to-tile glaze and edge variation Often more repeatable faces and dimensions
Common format Squares, rectangles and hand-cut shapes Generally rectangular field tile
Specification Verify workshop sample, tolerances and finish Check manufacturer’s published data sheet
Price Workshop and shipping quote required Depends on retailer and specified model

Is subway tile a different ceramic material?

No. ‘Subway tile’ is a design description, commonly used for rectangular ceramic wall tiles. Zellige indicates an artisanal Moroccan tradition and can be square or rectangular. A rectangular Moroccan handmade tile may visually resemble subway tile while differing substantially in making process. Compare technical documents, not just names used in online listings.

Why does genuine handmade zellige look less uniform?

The process can produce variations in glaze reflection, edges and individual pieces. How much variation is normal is specific to the workshop and approved sample range. A carefully manufactured tile may imitate this appearance using controlled processes, but visual variation alone does not prove Moroccan origin or handwork. See our authenticity checklist.

Which one is easier to install?

Consistent manufactured dimensions can simplify layout and alignment. Handmade edge and thickness variation may require more decisions around preparation, joints and cuts, especially at corners and cabinetry. Installation quality depends on the tile and substrate, not on its marketing label alone. Ask your installer to evaluate physical samples before committing to labor costs.

Is zellige more expensive than subway tile?

It can be, but there is no credible universal price comparison. The total installed cost depends on glaze, cutting, volume, freight, waste, substrate preparation and local installation labor. An inexpensive-looking quote can exclude packing, tax, shipping or a complex pattern. Use the quote-first price guide to compare landed, not just unit, cost.

Which is better for a white kitchen backsplash?

If you value a calm repeatable surface with precise lines, a consistent manufactured rectangular product may be suitable. If changing light on hand-finished glaze is central to the design, consider actual zellige samples. Whichever you choose, evaluate the grout sample alongside the cabinetry and under-counter lighting. Our white zellige backsplash guide walks through the choices.

Can both tiles go on a shower wall?

Potentially, if the exact product and waterproof assembly are appropriate. ‘Subway’ does not guarantee shower approval, and ‘zellige’ does not imply water resistance for every tile. Tile Council of North America makes clear that grout joints are not waterproof. Confirm wall-tile suitability, substrate, waterproofing and local installation requirements.

Does a square tile have to be zellige?

Not at all. Square is a geometric shape; it does not establish origin, clay body or manufacturing process. Our classic square collection shows color-and-shape sourcing enquiries, not already-certified products. A workshop must confirm the specific square tile before it can be described as a supplied Moroccan product.

How should a buyer decide between the two?

Request one physical sample board of each shortlisted product. Compare the surface in your actual space, dimensional variation, edge quality, cleaning, manufacturer data, expected labor and complete landed cost. If an artisan origin story matters, require credible provenance rather than relying on marketing language or pictures alone.
