How Many Zellige Tiles Do You Need? Square Feet, Waste and Layout

Quick answer: Measure the actual area, convert to square feet or square metres, calculate nominal tile coverage and then add a project-specific allowance for cuts and breakage. A simple count is a planning estimate, not an approved procurement quantity: handmade shape, module size, joints, color blending and a complex layout affect final requirements.

Questions answered in this guide

Illustrative coverage before joints, wastage and variation
Nominal tile Area per tile Tiles per sq ft (theoretical)
4 × 4 in 16 sq in 9
3 × 3 in 9 sq in 16
2 × 2 in 4 sq in 36

These are mathematical examples for exactly sized squares with zero allowance for grout joints, breakage or variation; they are not verified product dimensions.

How do I measure a zellige backsplash?

Split the wall into simple rectangles; multiply width by height for each and add them. For example, an 8 ft by 3 ft rectangular backsplash is 24 sq ft before deducting large openings. Decide with your installer whether small outlets and trim areas should be deducted: subtracting every tiny void often creates a false sense of precision because many cuts still consume tile.

How many 4×4 inch tiles cover one square foot?

Theoretical math is 144 square inches per square foot divided by 16 square inches per precisely 4 × 4 in tile, or nine tiles. This ignores joint width, size variation and cuts. If the workshop supplies a nominal 10 × 10 cm square, its exact mathematical coverage differs. Always let the installer confirm the planned module and actual sampled size.

What about metric tiles?

For a precise 10 × 10 cm tile, the face covers 100 cm²; one square metre contains 10,000 cm², so the idealized count is 100 pieces per m² before allowing for installation. The number is a geometric baseline only, not a purchase recommendation. Metric documentation is useful because a Moroccan supplier and U.S. designer can refer to the same physical target without rounding errors.

How much extra tile should I order for waste?

There is no universal safe waste percentage for all zellige patterns. Borders, diagonal layouts, irregular hand-cut edges, odd room geometry, breakage and future repairs can increase quantity. Ask the installer to define the project allowance after reviewing actual samples and a layout. A suggested percentage from an unrelated standard tile calculator should not become a guarantee for artisanal mosaics.

How do stars, hexagons and chevrons change the count?

Irregular shapes cannot be estimated accurately using a simple square-face count. Layouts may require paired shapes, complementary filler tiles, patterned repeats or special borders. Obtain the actual mosaic module or drawing from the workshop, then calculate coverage by module and measure cut losses at the perimeter. Our geometry guide explains why a repeated pattern is more than one interchangeable tile.

How do I calculate tile for a floor?

Measure the complete floor and all transitions, then check that the selected product is actually suitable for the environment. Quantity calculations do not substitute for wet-area, slip-resistance, substrate and movement-joint design. For safety-related requirements, the current ANSI A326.3 classification and qualified local installer take precedence over a decorative visual mock-up.

Can I calculate boxes before a supplier is selected?

No exact box count is possible without verified pieces per box or coverage per carton, packaged weight and packing method. A concept catalogue does not certify these figures. Send the total area and preferred shape with a quote request; the selected workshop can confirm sale units, cartons, packing, lead time and breakage terms.

What information speeds up my quantity quote?

Provide a dimensioned plan, net measured area, intended use, selected color code, shape, layout photo, planned grout joint, spare-tile requirement and U.S. destination. Ask whether the quote covers measured installed area or shipped material area. Our architect specification guide has a longer checklist.
